SUMMER 2010 NEWS HEADLINES

Get your Hunter Fit

Jane Nixon MA, Vet MB, BSc, MRCVS, MFH recently wrote an article for Central Horse News on “getting your hunter fit”; a topic on which she is well qualified to speak, not only as an experienced equine vet, but in her role as Field Master of the Grafton Hunt.

An extract from this article, including advice for getting fit any horse required to do a serious job can be read on our GET YOUR HUNTER FIT page in the ADVICE section.

Flies & other pests

Horse FlyLove them or, more likely, hate them, flies are everywhere during the summer months. They seem to have a ceaseless desire to annoy and cause harm to both human and animal. And horses seem to be at the top of their targeted species. Buzzing around the ears, biting their bodies and laying eggs (and subsequently maggots) in any exposed wounds if given a chance. So if you’d like to know how we can fight this foe, how we can best protect our horses from their attacks, and what can be done if our carefully laid defences are breached, vet Andrew Wallace will tell you more on our FLIES page in the ADVICE section.

“West Nile” Disease

With West Nile Virus now reaching central Europe; please see Philip Ivens’ article on this disease on our WEST NILE VIRUS page in the ADVICE section, or for more information on the new WNV Vaccine, please email philip@nixonequinevets.co.uk.

Milton Keynes Riding Club

About a year ago, our client, Annerly Wyatt (pictured 4th from the left below) recounted her dream to start a riding club for Milton Keynes to Jane Nixon. Agreeing that it was a good idea, Jane immediately offered Annerly the use of the Nixon Equine Equine Vets clinic facilities, to help her realise that dream!

Milton Keynes Riding Club launches at Nixon Equine Vets Clinic

The result: Milton Keynes Riding Club officially launched on July 1st 2010 at Nixon Equine Vets Clinic, as a brand new affiliated riding club for Milton Keynes and the surrounding area. The club hopes to offer a wide variety of club events, with a friendly atmosphere. Membership is open to both horse owners and non-horse owners.
Events will include sponsored rides, clinics for jumping, cross country and flatwork, clear round evenings, and, as of 2011, club shows for all levels of experience. It is anticipated that events will be held either at Nixon Equine Vets clinic using our large all-weather arena or paddocks; at Salcey Forest Ridings, and at Greenacres in Puxley. Clinics for non-horse owners will take place at Blackmires Farm where horses can be hired. Un-mounted events will include visits to places such as the hunt kennels.

Nixon Equine Vets recently polled its client base online, asking which shortlisted charity it should support. The overwhelming result was Bucks Fire & Rescue who do a fantastic job of rescuing injured, trapped or stranded horses. Nixon Equine Vet Juliet Blayney recently trained with Bucks Fire & Rescue on emergency rescue procedures for equines and we are very pleased to be able to support the charity with donations for this very worthy cause for at least the first half of 2010. Tips on managing your horse during prolonged frost and snow

3 important areas to watch for in severe weather are water, feed and exercise:

Water...Jane Nixon riding Dinky at the 2009 Sports Horse Breeders Championship at Addington Manor Equestrian Centre
• Water – unfrozen must be regularly available
• Water from forage is decreased – frozen grass – so your horse needs to drink more.
• Fresh water and break ice regularly on troughs & stable buckets.
• Tepid water on return from exercise
• Buckets in the corner of box; put into tyre & pack with straw to insulate against freezing
• If there is insufficient water there is a greater chance of impaction colic or choke.
Roughage - long fibre...
• Adequate roughage - long fibre
• Supplement with high quality hay/haylage up to 15Kg per day (small bale) for average horse
• To keep a horse warm feed more hay & supplement feeds containing fibre for internal warmth
• Feed succulents, carrots, sugarbeet [avoid frozen beet water which may cause colic]
• Reduce cereal feed, whose digested biproducts may cause colic, tying up and lymphangitis.
• Assess droppings regularly re number and volume, any reduction requires increased water intake to avoid impaction colic.
Exercise...
• Carefully manage returning to exercise after box rest or reduced exercise to avoid cramping
• Gently increase exercise, keep warm with exercise blankets
• Per week in box – about 3 days walking followed by 3days trotting before canter
• Do not return to usual working diet until cantered 3 times.
